Holy snowstorm, Philadelphia!!!!

The US postal Service closed today because of the blizzard, but the Lifesaving team at the Philadelphia animal control shelter IS STILL WORKING to save lives!!! WOW!!!

But they need your help -- ASAP!

There are two URGENT animals that must leave the shelter immediately. Their pictures and descriptions are posted below.

Pickle- URGENT

Pickle (A09507272) is a really wiggly and adorable 6 month old Pit mix puppy that was found as a stray. She has the cutest half-prick ears with a gorgeous brindle coat. She has lots of energy and would make a fabulous running partner! She’s on the smaller side – only 36 pounds- andwill stay petite! Pickle seems to like other dogs and looooooves people. Unfortunately Pickle is now on treatment for a severe case of kennel cough and needs to leave ASAP! Please save this adorable little girl today! Photos at:

Gatorade- URGENT

Gatorade (A09544127) is a sad but handsome male tabby cat. Poor Gatorade was found in a box, left for dead, in West Philly on January 31. We took him into the shelter and discovered that he was emaciated, dehydrated, had a very low body temperature, and conjunctivitis in one eye. He has hardly any muscle mass so is regaining his ability to walk and get up. Since arriving at the shelter Gatorade has been pampered by shelter staff with fluids, a heating pad, meds and special care BUT the shelter is no place for a sad case like this. Gatorade could really benefit from a warm, loving foster home where he can really recover and continue to gain weight and receive his medicine (provided for free by shelter). He is a very sweet cat that loves to snuggle and is friendly and loving. Gatorade needs to leave ASAP! Photos at:

Black and White and Furry All Over!

QUESTION: What’s black and white and furry all over?

ANSWER: The wonderful cats and dogs at Philadelphia’s animal control shelter (ACCT)!

During the month of January, all black & white pets are available at special discounted adoption fees!

The ACCT shelter is located at 111 W. Hunting Park Avenue in Philadelphia, PA, 19140. They are open for adoptions 7 days a week! Adoption hours are: Monday through Thursday, 4 to 7 pm; Friday, 12 to 7 pm; and Saturday & Sunday, 12 to 5 pm.

Here are just a few of the black & white pets that are ready to be your new best friend!

TROUBLE

Trouble is a really unique and handsome looking stocky 1-2 year old American Staffordshire Terrier mix that was found as a stray. The stressful shelter environment makes him uncomfortable and the best situation is for this gorgeous guy to get a quiet and loving home ASAP. He is a medium energy dog that doesn’t need tons of exercise but should at least get a daily walk. He needs to get out of the shelter so he can loosen up. If you can offer this boy a home, please get into contact with us ASAP!

SKEETER

Skeeter is a 6-12 month old pit bull mix that was found as a stray. He is all white with a black patch over one eye making him look absolutely adorable. Skeeter has lots of energy and would love to go running with you! When he’s playing, he barrels right into you not realizing his own strength. He’d do best in a home with someone that has had previous dog experience. If this sounds like a match for you, please come meet Skeeter!

BOBBY

Bobby is a very handsome, short and stout black and white 1-2 year old American Bully mix with funny cropped ears that was found as a stray. He is a little nervous at the shelter so he sticks close by. What Bobby really wants out of life is a person he can snuggle with – it’s what he’s best at! Bobby loves having his butt scratched and also enjoys an occasional game of “Grab a toy and act like a fool.” If you are looking to add a medium energy boy to your house, please consider Bobby. Bobby seems to like other dogs.

BUDDY

Buddy is a 6-12 month old Boston Terrier/American Pit Bull Terrier mix. He was found as a stray and is looking for a loving family to take him in. Buddy would be great with children and would enjoy hours of endless fun and games. His new family would need to work with him on basic obedience skills (sit, stay, down, come) and will need to be committed to giving him daily exercise – he is not a couch potato! Poor Buddy is on treatment for kennel cough and needs to leave IMMEDIATELY. Please help rescue Buddy.

SOCKS

Socks is a really pretty 6-12 month old American Pit Bull Terrier mix. She loves to cuddle and wiggles with delight as soon as someone takes her out of her kennel. Somehow she manages to wiggle while sitting down! Confidence isn’t Socks’ strong suit, so she’d love to get into foster care and have some socialization. If you are looking for a stunning dog and have older kids, Socks might be the girl for you! Come meet her!

SONYA

Sonya is a 3-5 year old white pit bull mix that was found as a stray. She has had many litters and people don't want her because of her sagging boobies. She's waiting for someone who can look past her exterior and see the sweet girl inside. It's a good thing she loves meeting people and going for walks because her beautiful blue eyes capture everyone's attention. Sonya would make a great family dog! Sonya doesn't like pushy dogs and should not go to the dog park but she can live with a male dog. Please come save this sweet girl!

CARL

DUCHESS

Duchess is a really cute and petite little 1-2 year old pit mix who was surrendered because her owners couldn’t afford her. Duchess has lived with cats before and is a star at offsite events because she loves kids! She is loving and affectionate and a great family dog. Duchess seems unused to other dogs and doesn’t understand how to interact with them. Poor Duchess is on treatment for kennel cough and needs to leave the shelter ASAP. Please rescue this beautiful girl!

TIMOTHY

Timothy is a super cute and sad looking 1-2 year old Shar Pei- Mastiff mix. Timothy is very underweight, but has no other obvious health issues. Because Timothy is underweight, he tends to scarf down his food, so some hand feeding would benefit him greatly. He did very well meeting other dogs, and had no reaction to cats, but we would recommend observing all interactions, especially as he starts to feel better and gain more weight. Timothy is extremely kind and gentile, the kind of dog that will cozy up on the couch with you and potentially be a blanket hog.

VENNY

Venny is a 1-2 year old male cat with a handsome tuxedo coat. He was found as a stray and taken to the shelter. Venny is very scared in this loud environment, but is a very sweet boy. He needs someone to love him and take care of him.

GARFIELD

Garfield is a 3-5 year old male cat with a soft tuxedo coat and pretty green eyes. He was surrendered to our shelter because his owner died. Garfield is not used to this noisy environment and is very scared at the shelter.

GLOSSY

Glossy is a 3-5 year old female cat. She is black & white and loveable all over! She was found as a stray wandering along by herself. Glossy is altered, microchipped, and ready to go home today! Do you have the home for this pretty girl?

PENENNA

Pennenna is a 1-2 year old female cat with a silky black coat. She was surrendered to the shelter because her owner was having landlord issues. Penenna is already spayed, microchipped, and ready to go home today! Can you give this girl a home?

Toni is a 1-2 year old female cat with a beautiful black, long-haired coat. She was found as a stray and someone brought her into the shelter. Toni is just getting better from a cold and is finally ready to be adopted. She is very sweet and needs to find a new home soon.

MAGIC

Magic is a 5-10 year old male cat who is already altered and ready to go home today! He was likely someone’s beloved pet that got lost, but was found as a stray and they never came back for him. Magic loves attention and purrs as soon as you pet him. He belongs snuggled up to someone rather than here at the shelter.

ROCK

Rock is an adult male cat with a silky black coat. He was surrendered by his owners because they no longer wanted him. It’s so sad because he is a sweet, laid back gentleman. Rock is a real sweetheart that deserves a good home.

CHLOE

Chloe is a 1-2 year old female cat. She is a tuxedo and has cute little white paws. Chloe also has very stunning green eyes. She was surrendered by her owners because someone was allergic to her. She is already altered and ready to go home today.

LUKE

Luke is a 3-5 year old male cat. He is all black except for a tiny white tip on his tail. Luke was surrendered to our shelter because his owner died. He has a very cute meow and loves asking for some love and attention.

KILLIAN

Killian is a 6-12 month male cat. He is very sweet and has a cute black and white coat. Killian was surrendered by his owner because they had too many animals. He loves rolling over on his back and asking for some belly rubs. Please, take this love-bug home!

BANDIT

Bandit is a 1-2 year old female cat. She is white and the top of her head and back is all black. Very cute! She was surrendered by her owners because they could no longer afford to keep her. Bandit loves attention and was sticking her paws outside of her cage as if to say, “Hey! Look at me!” Please, give this girl the love that she needs.

DIAMOND

Diamond is a young female cat with a tuxedo coat and cute little white paws. She was surrendered by her owners because they no longer wanted her. It’s so sad because she is incredibly sweet and loving! Can you give this girl a second chance?

Troy was brought to the shelter after he was taken from an environment that was not suitable for him. He is microchipped and just needs to be neutered before he goes home.

BENNY
Benny is a 5-10 year old black Shepherd mix that was surrendered to the shelter because of a death in his owners family. Benny can be aloof when first meeting people and slowly warms up. He prefers standing next to you with an occasional pet rather than cuddling. He’s nervous at the shelter and needs a foster home or an understanding adopter who can help him adjust to being in a home setting again. Because he is so nervous, he’d be best with kids 13 and over. CHANCE

Terrified Chance is a 1-2 year old Shepherd/Rottweiler that needs to leave the shelter ASAP because he is so scared and stressed! He was surrendered by his owner because they where having issues with their landlord. He really misses the comfort and quiet of the home and is quite stressed here in the shelter. He solicits attention by putting his head on your lap and looks up to you with very lonely eyes. Chance seems to be house broken, has lived with other dogs and walks quite well on a leash. Sadie is a gorgeous rust colored female Retriever mix 9-12 months old. How adorable is this pup? Sadie is not only quite a looker, but she has a bubbly personality that will keep you on your toes. Sadie is play and loves to give kisses! She needs work on perfecting ‘sit’ but is starting to get the hang of it. She likes to kiss, cuddle and romp. CARLOS
Chubby Carlos was picked up as a stray and is very uneasy here in the shelter. He's a 1-2 year old hound/retriever mix that would love to be anywhere but here. Carlos met a few different dogs and seems to prefer a more calm dog that won't be too jumpy. He walks well on a leash and seems to be housebroken. Carlos has shown no signs of aggression. VIOLET
Violet is an adorable and loving 1- 2 year old female pit mix with pretty chocolate and white markings. Found wandering the streets as a stray, Violet came in totally emaciated and has slowly gained weight in our care here at the shelter. She desperately needs foster care to gain some weight and learn the joys of living in a loving home. Although Violet is nervous when new people come in the room, she will bury her head in your lap if you sit on the floor and give you gentle kisses. She loves to hug everyone she meets. Violet does not like cats (she thinks they would be a tasty treat!) but seems to like other dogs. Most of all she loves people and will be your dedicated snuggler for years to come. Violet is good in her crate, and seems housebroken. She needs to learn how to walk right on the leash but already knows “sit”! Please give this lovely lady a second chance at life! Photos at:

OREO
Wiggly Oreo is a short, white and black spotted pit bull mix. She is only 6-12 months old and about 55 pounds. Her family surrendered her right after Christmas because they were moving and Oreo wasn’t allowed to come along. Being a puppy, Oreo still has lots of energy and will need to be exercised every day. She is very friendly and wiggles her whole body when meeting people. She still jumps up, so she’d be best in a home with kids 10 and older, though she has lived with kids before. Oreo likes to rough house with other dogs, and has lived with 2 other dogs before. Oreo is on treatment for kennel and a strain in her leg so needs to leave ASAP! Photos at:

DESSY

Dessy is a dog in foster care but that needs rescue help NOW! Please use your rescue connections to help find this SPECIAL NEEDS dog a good home! Dessy came into the ACCT shelter as a stray and we really thought that she would die that night. Her body temperature was 94 degrees, she was emaciated and not doing well. Now she is anamazing happy, healthy girl. A few days into Dessy finally getting up and around on her own, we discovered that she was completely unresponsive to us, after much banging around of pans, and making obnoxious noises, we discovered that Dessy was deaf. We’ve began teaching her hand signals and laser pointers. She is a very smart girl and catches on quickly. She is good with most other dogs and is very, very playful. She likes to pull around people on skateboards while chasing a ball, she is great at fetch, and can decapitate a stuffed animal in less than 30 seconds! Dessy loves to swim and play in water! She is a high energy girl that loves walks and lots of play time. Dessy is great in the car and enjoys sticking her head out the window. She is a great snuggler and can easily entertain herself with toys. Dessy is already spayed and microchipped and is ready to be adopted into a wonderful, understanding home. KEV

My name is Kev, I have been in the shelter for more than 200 days. I came here as a stray on May 30, 2009. I am still waiting for someone to save me. I’ve seen hundreds of dogs come and go. Some leave in vans packed with dogs and cats that are off to find forever homes with rescue groups. Sometimes people that I recognize come in and take dogs and return in a few weeks with success stories of finding homes for their foster dogs. I’ve seen other dogs leave right from the shelter to families with excited children that are already fighting about whose bed their new four legged family member will sleep in. But I’m still here. I’m a good boy. I’m high-spirited and goofy. I’m energetic and playful. I am good with all types of body handling and being pinched and poked- in fact, he loves being tickled and runs around like a goof if he thinks you want to play! I like to chase toys, take nice walks and snuggling always makes me feel good. It seems that all the good things about me are also the things that have prevented me from finding a home, but I would try really hard if someone would just take the time to teach me to be better with my manners. When I came to the shelter I was just a pup, now I’m in my teenage years and I really hope I don’t grow old here. Or worse. Even though hundreds have passed me by, I have never lost my love for people. I am hopeful. Photos at:

JADA
Jada is a gorgeous caramel colored already spayed female Pit mix 1-2 years old. Poor Jada was found as a stray and is skinny and on treatment for kennel cough. She desperately needs some TLC! Jada is gorgeous- she is tall and lanky with an elegant long nose and beautiful soft eyes. Jada is such a sweet, loving dog. Jada loves to lay at your feet and will make someone a very special dog. Jada is great with body handling- she is fine being pinched poked and especially loves kisses! If you give Jada any baby talk she gets so wiggly and happy her whole body swishes from side to side. MARIO
Chocolaty, doe eyed Mario needs to get out of the shelter ASAP! Mario came in as a stray in July and has yet to find a foster home. He is about 1-2 years old and is a bundle of energy. Mario would thrive in a home that is active and understanding. He needs some work on leash walking, but he is eager to please and very food motivated. COOLIO
Coolio is a stunning largely white terrier with green (!) eyes, between 1-2 years old that was brought in as a stray. He is an independent boy who is not very needy. He likes some affection but also like to explore his environment. He needs some basic leash training as the pulls a little, but is friendly and has been evaluated as very adoptable. Coolio turns heads and we hope he will do so with you on long walks in the park, or in your neighborhood?! Coolio has not been evaluated with cats, but is fine with most other dogs. Photos at:

GABBY
Gabby is a young brindle girl of about 1 year, who already had some babies but is now spayed and ready to go! She came to the shelter as a stray and seems over stimulated in this loud place. She loves going for a walk, but needs some leash training. Gabby is curious and of medium to high energy, although after some walking she settles down. She should not go to a home with small dogs, cats, or small children as she can be an active girl, with a prey drive for small animals. She has shown no food aggression or any other aggression, and is great with being handled. Please gives this girl a chance at having a normal life, with some stability, treats, walks and love! MIZ
Miz is a strikingly handsome 9-12 month old light brindle male Pit mix. Poor Miz came into the shelter in May as a stray and still hasn’t gained all the weight he needs to because he’s in a stressful kennel environment! Miz is a playful, athletic, rambunctious boy who desperately needs a home where he can release all his energy and channel it into positive learning. After just a few minutes out of his confining kennel MIz is a different dog and justa few minutes of playing calms him down tremendously. Haze came to ACCT as an owner surrender because her owners can no longer afford her. At only about 2 years old, she is a calm girl that enjoys playtime but isn’t overly rambunctious. Someone is really missing out on this dog! Bull is a gentle light chocolate brindle male lab/pit mix. He's about-5 years old and came to ACCT as a stray. Bull has adoring eyes and a very sweet sprit. He's calm, walks well on a leash and is great with body handling. This big guy is a snuggle that has seen some hard times. Lala is a 3-5 year old cropped ear American Staffordshire Terrier mix that was found as a stray with her daughter Lulu. It is very obvious that she has had many litters. She is a sweet girl. SABIR

Sabir is an 8 month old Pit Bull, approximately 35-40lbs. He is neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on his shots. He bonds with his owners easily and loves to be pet, but he has lots of energy so daily walks, exercise, tug, and lots of play are necessary! He loves to chew on Kongs, ropes, and bones -- we haven't had a problem with him chewing on anything that doesn't belong to him. He takes treats very gently from your hand, and is eager to please so he learns fast and can't wait to show you his sit.We are working on commands, so far he knows sit, lay down, and crate (for crate training). We're working on paw and how to walk on a leash. Sabir needs a dog-savvy owner who will devote the time needed to training, socialization, and obedience. He is house trained but just needs the first week to be shown where to go and where not to go because he gets excited. He does NOT soil his crate and he's learned that going potty outside gets him treats so he's doing very well with house-training.He's an energetic little boy that will do best in a home where he is the only pet because he does get a little territorial and really loves to have all the attention on him. He is good with children but with his energy level he'll do best with older children (8+).

DEBA
Deba is a cheerful lass that is a 3-5 year old female pit mix that is already spayed. Poor Deba came to the shelter because her owner was arrested for drugs and for living in an abandoned property in unsanitary conditions. After this sad start to life Deba deserves to live in a home filled with love. She is a playful girl who has learned how to sit and chase toys and who learns very quickly. She sits in a funny, comical way with her feet to the side. She has a very even temperament and is extremely approachable and nice. In a home environment she would really be able to blossom, and she likes other doggies. She likes to sit right next to you and be close, she'd make a fine psychiatrist. Deba would like a doggy sweater to help keep her warm this time of year. She rides well in the car, but needs the security of a tether in the back seat or animal carrier (otherwise she wants to sit in your lap in the car). Deba has tested for a high prey drive, this means that unfortunately she cannot live with kitties, fuzzy bunnies, or other small animals. Jewels is a beautiful chocolate pit mix 1-2 years old that was brought to ACCT when her owner went to jail. Jewels is a sweet girl, she is very attentive and loving, but she does need some manners. Are you interested in one of the dogs at ACCT? If so…Great! First, decide if you are interested in fostering or adopting! To determine whether you should apply to foster versus adopt, please consider the following information.

To adopt a dog means to commit to being the primary caregiver for the dog and keep it in your possession, for yourself for the rest of its life. Adult dogs are $75 to adopt, puppies (under 6 months old) are $125- that donation covers the vaccines, microchip, surgery, etc that the dog has received.

To foster a dog means to commit to temporarily caring for the dog while also working to find the dog a “forever home”/adopter. While fostering the dog remains ACCT’s property, but the foster parent takes responsibility for marketing the dog, and doing a preliminary screening of any potential adopters. When an adopter is found, the foster parent must coordinate with the ACCT Life Saving office to approve the adopter and finalize the adoption. If the foster parent decides after time that they would like to keep the dog, they must complete the adoption process and pay the adoption fee. ** Fostering is not a trial adoption.**

Although previous fostering experience is not required, ideal foster care provider will have basic knowledge of animal care and training and be committed to finding their foster animal a safe and loving “forever home”. As a foster care provider, you will provide the animals with care including, food, water, shelter, training, grooming and medical treatment when necessary. The PSPCA will provide clinic and vet care, behavior and training resources, and adoption counseling. We rely on the foster parent to find an adoptive home for the dog, but we can help! We provide adoption events for you attend, can post your foster dog on Petfinder for you, etc. We cannot guarantee how long a foster dog will be in your care, since you keep the dog until an adoptive home is found, which can be anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months depending on the dog, and how heavily you market it.

B-E-A-G-L-E-S BEAGLES!!!!!

SEAGLE THE BEAGLE

Hi there, I’m Seagle the Beagle! I’m about 10 years old but I’ve got plenty of spunk and love left to share. I was picked up by animal control as a stray, but I clearly belonged to someone because I’m still wearing my old collar. I sure am sad that my people never came to get me! I don’t like being here at the shelter. I’m getting kennel cough (i.e., a doggie cold) but when you take me home, the shelter will give you my meds for free. Once I’m in a less stressful environment, I should get better soon. As for my physique, I’m on the smaller side for a Beagle boy. I love to go outside for walks and explore the yard with my volunteer friend Petra (she’s so nice to me!). I’m also very affectionate and will sit by your side for hours – I just LOVE being pet! I’m not altered yet, but once I go into foster care I can have bloodwork done (courtesy of the shelter, of course!) and then they’ll see about fixing me. Oh, and I have a cyst over one of my eyes and I’m a bit bowlegged, but don’t worry -- neither of these things is painful. Petra tells me they “add character” and make me look SUPER cute! TIMOTHY

I’m Timothy and I was surrendered to the shelter with my brother after my owner could no longer take care of us. My brother went to his new home already, but I’m still at the shelter waiting to be saved. I might look old, but my volunteer friends think I’m probably 6 or 7 years young, based on my teeth. I was super dirty when I arrived at the shelter – I was SO happy when those nice ladies gave me a bath! I’m not fixed yet, but I will be once I’m adopted. I’d probably do best in a home without other dogs. My previous owner kept me outside (so sad!) so I still need to be housetrained, but I promise to learn if you’ll be patient and teach me. Hannah- URGENT!!!
Hannah (A09330059) is a super cute female 6 month old Shepherd-Pit mix that desperately needs out of the shelter! Poor Hannah was found by the police in the North Philadelphia having been shot in the face with a BB gun. Our vet believes Hannah had a BB bullet in her eye, so her damaged eye was removed in surgery. Now Hannah needs a quiet, clean, loving place to recover- she is at high risk of getting sick if she stays in the shelter since she is post-op. Hannah is very sweet, she can be shy at first but is a total love bug. She seems to like other dogs, but needs her damaged protected from them. Hannah could probably live with cats- she is nervous and uncomfortable around them but not aggressive- with socialization and training she should be fine. Timothy (09306804) and Tabalt (09306879) are a bonded pair of beagles that came to the shelter because their owner is very sick. Timothy suffers from a ear hematoma and some slight hair loss, but is otherwise in good shape. Tabalt is a little underweight and also has some hair loss, but the boys will be looking good in no time! Both boys seem to be housebroken, walk well on leashes and enjoy the company of other dogs. Both dogs have very severe cases of Kennel Cough and need leave ASAP- they can go into foster care together or separated.

Cody is a 1-2 year old American Bulldog mix that had the unfortunate fate of ending up with a family that knew nothing about his breed and surrendered him because he was too active for them. You can’t help but feel sorry for this mushy faced boy when he looks at you with his big brown eyes. With a strong leader, he will blossom into a gentleman of a dog. He knows “sit” and walks pretty well on leash, though this could be because he is a little nervous in the shelter environment. Sweet Magic (09118400) is a 1-2 year old female pit mix that was surrendered because her owners decided they just don’t want her anymore. She is lively and very affectionate. Stiller (A09024266) is an awesome 2 year old American Pit Bull Terrier mix who recently had a litter of puppies, though we do not know what happened to them. Stiller was picked up as a stray and bares the scars of scuffles with other dogs in the search for food and shelter. She is a really sweet girl and loves to be in your lap. She is underweight as she could not find enough food on the streets but has shown no food aggression. If she is to go to a home with other dogs, Stiller would do best in a home without female dogs and someone with pit bull experience. She is fine with people and children. Tigger is best as a one and only pet and he won't disappoint, he gives sticky, slobber kisses and likes to put his drooly cheeks on your lap whenever possible. Coolio (A08194584) is a stunning largely white terrier with green (!) eyes, between 1-2 years old that was brought in as a stray. He is an independent boy who is not very needy. He likes some affection but also like to explore his environment. He needs some basic leash training as the pulls a little, but is friendly and has been evaluated as very adoptable. She came to the shelter as a stray and seems over stimulated in this loud place. She loves going for a walk, but needs some leash training. Gabby is curious and of medium to high energy, although after some walking she settles down. She should not go to a home with small dogs, cats, or small children as she can be an active girl, with a prey drive for small animals. MIZ- URGENT!

Miz (A07723129) is a strikingly handsome 9-12 month old light brindle male Pit mix. Poor Miz came into the shelter in May as a stray and still hasn’t gained all the weight he needs to because he’s in a stressful kennel environment! Miz is a playful, athletic, rambunctious boy who desperately needs a home where he can release all his energy and channel it into positive learning. After just a few minutes out of his confining kennel Miz is a different dog and justa few minutes of playing calms him down tremendously. Miz is a smart dog that since arriving at the shelter has already learned “Sit”. He is very handsome with his golden eyes and will steal your heart! Jade came to ACCT as a stray with a very deep wound from and embedded collar. Her neck is healing, but her sprit is damaged from being here so long. Once Jade has time to run around and let off some steam, she becomes a big floppy love bug that is affectionate and delightful. KEV- URGENT!

My name is Kev (A07740386), I have been in the shelter for 200+ days. I came here as a stray on May 30, 2009. I am still waiting for someone to save me. I’ve seen hundreds of dogs come and go. Some leave in vans packed with dogs and cats that are off to find forever homes with rescue groups. Sometimes people that I recognize come in and take dogs and return in a few weeks with success stories of finding homes for their foster dogs. I’ve seen other dogs leave right from the shelter to families with excited children that are already fighting about whose bed their new four legged family member will sleep in. But I’m still here. I’m a good boy. I’m high-spirited and goofy. I’m energetic and playful. I am good with all types of body handling and being pinched and poked- in fact, he loves being tickled and runs around like a goof if he thinks you want to play! I like to chase toys, take nice walks and snuggling always makes me feel good. It seems that all the good things about me are also the things that have prevented me from finding a home, but I would try really hard if someone would just take the time to teach me to be better with my manners. When I came to the shelter I was just a pup, now I’m in my teenage years and I really hope I don’t grow old here. Or worse. DEBA- URGENT!

Deba needs someone to love her ASAP! This little pit girl (about 3-5 years old) came to ACCT because her owner was arrested for drugs and for living in an abandoned property in unsanitary conditions. After this sad start to life Deba deserves to live in a home filled with love. Deba had to have an emergency spay and is now trying to recover in the loud, stressful shelter. She is at high risk of getting sick post-op, and needs to leave ASAP or will be at risk of euthanasia! She is a smart, food motivated girl that aims to please and is ok with other dogs. DESSY- URGENT

Dessy is a dog in foster care but that needs rescue help NOW! Please use your rescue connections to help find this SPECIAL NEEDS dog a good home! Dessy came into the ACCT shelter as a stray and we really thought that she would die that night. Her body temperature was 94 degrees, she was emaciated and not doing well. Now she is anamazing happy, healthy girl. A few days into Dessy finally getting up and around on her own, we discovered that she was completely unresponsive to us, after much banging around of pans, and making obnoxious noises, we discovered that Dessy was deaf. We’ve began teaching her hand signals and laser pointers. She is a very smart girl and catches on quickly. She is good with most other dogs and is very, very playful. She likes to pull around people on skateboards while chasing a ball, she is great at fetch, and can decapitate a stuffed animal in less than 30 seconds! Dessy loves to swim and play in water! She is a high energy girl that loves walks and lots of play time. Dessy is great in the car and enjoys sticking her head out the window. She is a great snuggler and can easily entertain herself with toys. Dessy is already spayed and microchipped and is ready to be adopted into a wonderful, understanding home. SHADOW

Shadow (A09318043) is a 3-5 year old Chow Chow mix that was surrendered by his family because they couldn’t afford to keep him anymore. He greets people by jumping straight up and down in his kennel. People always stare at him because of his different colored eyes. He’s a calm dog outside of his kennel but he is distracted by all of the noises and smells. NOLA

Nola (A09325171) is a strikingly beautiful and petite female Hsky-Shepherd mix with different colored eyes who found wandering as a stray. She’s only 1-2 years old and is still learning not to jump but is eager to please. Like most Husky, she has tons of energy and would excel at being your running partner. Huskies are notorious escape artists, so she should never be left outside unattended. Nola is friendly but independent; she won’t constantly be begging for affection. MIMI
Mimi (A09229016) is a beautiful Black Lab mix puppy, around a year old, and boy does she live up to her breed. Being a "sporting" dog, she was all about the pigeons that were teasing her outside. With proper guidance, that energy could be channeled into being a well-trained, obedient sidekick! She is probably the sweetest girl you will ever meet, giving kisses and saying hello to every person that passes her way. When she has burned that puppy energy, she will press herself against your leg and look up at you with love in her eyes. She has already mastered "sit" and could learn so much more with your help! She gets along well with other dogs and will probably enjoy your cat as well!

Please call or email the Life Saving Department to set up a time to come down to the ACCT facility (111 W Hunting Park Ave). Life Saving staff is any day (the sooner the better!) 9am- 6pm to fill out an application and meet the many wonderful dogs in need of foster care and adoption. If you have dogs of your own, you need to bring at least one in to meet any potential dogs and make sure there is no major personality clash. Please also bring proof that you are allowed dogs at your home if you rent.

To determine whether you should apply to foster versus adopt, please consider the following information:

-To adopt a dog means to commit to being the primary caregiver for the dog and keep it in your possession, for yourself for the rest of its life. Adult dogs are $75 to adopt, puppies (under 6 months old) are $125- that donation covers the vaccines, microchip, surgery, etc that the dog has received.

- To foster a dog means to commit to temporarily caring for the dog while also working to find the dog a “forever home”/adopter. While fostering the dog remains ACCT’s property, but the foster parent takes responsibility for marketing the dog, and doing a preliminary screening of any potential adopters. When an adopter is found, the foster parent must coordinate with the ACCT Life Saving office to approve the adopter and finalize the adoption. If the foster parent decides after time that they would like to keep the dog, they must complete the adoption process and pay the adoption fee. ** Fostering is not a trial adoption.**

200+ Days at Animal Control -- Kev and Miz

For those of you who don’t know a lot about the animal control shelter in Philadelphia, they have taken in more than 34,000 unwanted animals in 2009. That is a hard number to conceive -- 34,000 stories, 34,000 disappointments, 34,000 broken promises. There are approximately 200 cages for dogs. There have been 2 dogs at our shelter for more than 200 days. Thousands of animals came and went from those cages during that time. Last SPRING these 2 boys came to the shelter as strays. That is 29 weekends!

The shelter is full, at capacity. One of these days, it is going to be time for Miz or Kev to free up a space for a new arrival. Is their reward for living in a shelter cage going to be death at the shelter?

Please consider meeting one of these dogs and you will truly be saving their lives. Sniffles & Friends has kindly donated free training to the amazing person who adopts Miz or Kev.

URGENT- 206 days at the shelter as of Tuesday, December 22, 2009!

My name is Kev (A07740386), I came here as a stray on May 30, 2009. I am still waiting for someone to save me. I’ve seen hundreds of dogs come and go. Some leave in vans packed with dogs and cats that are off to find forever homes with rescue groups. Sometimes people that I recognize come in and take dogs and return in a few weeks with success stories of finding homes for their foster dogs. I’ve seen other dogs leave right from the shelter to families with excited children that are already fighting about whose bed their new four legged family member will sleep in. But I’m still here. I’m a good boy. I’m high-spirited and goofy. I’m energetic and playful. I am good with all types of body handling and being pinched and poked- in fact, he loves being tickled and runs around like a goof if he thinks you want to play! I like to chase toys, take nice walks and snuggling always makes me feel good. It seems that all the good things about me are also the things that have prevented me from finding a home, but I would try really hard if someone would just take the time to teach me to be better with my manners. When I came to the shelter I was just a pup, now I’m in my teenage years and I really hope I don’t grow old here. Or worse. Even though hundreds have passed me by, I have never lost my love for people. I am hopeful.

MIZ

URGENT- 208 days at the shelter as of Tuesday, December 22, 2009!

Miz (A07723129) is a strikingly handsome 9-12 month old light brindle male Pit mix. Poor Miz came into the shelter in May as a stray and still hasn’t gained all the weight he needs to because he’s in a stressful kennel environment! Miz is a playful, athletic, rambunctious boy who desperately needs a home where he can release all his energy and channel it into positive learning. After just a few minutes out of his confining kennel Miz is a different dog and just a few minutes of playing calms him down tremendously. Miz is a smart dog that since arriving at the shelter has already learned “Sit”. He is very handsome with his golden eyes and will steal your heart! He is unsocialized with other dogs- he desperately wants to play but all he knows how to do is jump on them, so he will not be a dog park dog, but could learn to live with a smart dog that can teach him the way of good dog behavior! Help this long term resident today!

Let's Make Snow Angels Together!

It's a SNOW DAY at the Philadelphia animal control shelter (ACCT)!!!! These babies would LOVE to come home and make snow angels with you, so come to the shelter ASAP!!! If you're interested in fostering or adopting any of these dogs, come to the ACCT shelter at 111 W. Hunting Park Avenue in Philadelphia. They're open 7 days a week! CARL is a beautiful boy looking for a new home. He is a Pit/Terrier mix, about 6-12 months old. He was brought in as a stray in mid-October. Carl is very soft but don’t let that fool you -- he has a ton of energy and is ready to play! He loves to play with other dogs, too. Carl is a love bug and with the right home will do well.

TIGGER is a 1-2 year old American Bulldog/Pit mix. He was surrendered to ACCT because his owner said "he escapes when he is shut out in the yard all by himself." Tigger is best as a one and only pet. He gives sticky, slobbery kisses and likes to put his drooly cheeks on your lap whenever possible! Tigger is like a canine locomotive on a leash, so he needs someone to teach him the proper way to walk. Tigger is a typical wiggle-butt and is very friendly with all of the people he meets. He has no resource guarding issues and is great with body handling.

KEV is a really cute and wiggly 9-12 month old male Pit mix. He is good with all types of body handling. In fact, he loves being tickled and runs around like a goof if he thinks you want to play! Kev could stand to use an owner who has experience with high-energy training. Until Kev has passed his training lessons it is recommended that he go to a home with no small children. Kev seems to like other dogs. Note: Since Kev has been waiting so long for his new home, his adopter will receive FREE dog training (donated by Sniffles & Friends).

JADA is a gorgeous caramel-colored female Pit mix, about 1-2 years old. She's already spayed! Poor Jada was found as a stray and is skinny and on treatment for kennel cough. She desperately needs some TLC! Gorgeous Jada is tall and lanky with an elegant long nose and beautiful soft eyes. She is such a sweet, loving dog who loves to lay at your feet and will make someone very happy. Jada is great with body handling and she especially loves giving/receiving kisses! If you give Jada any "baby talk," she gets so wiggly and happy that her whole body swishes from side to side.

DEBA needs someone to love her ASAP! This little Pittie girl (about 3-5 years old) came to ACCT because her owner was arrested for drugs and Deba was living in an abandoned property in unsanitary conditions. After this sad start to life, Deba deserves to live in a home filled with love. Deba had to have an emergency spay and is now trying to recover in the loud, stressful shelter. She is at high risk of getting sick post-operation, so she needs to leave ASAP or will be at risk of euthanasia! She is a smart, food-motivated girl that aims to please and is ok with other dogs. Deba can be shy but she's friendly and affectionate and will make a loving companion.NOTE: Since Deba has been waiting so long for her new home, her adopter will receive FREE dog training (donated by Sniffles & Friends).

BULL is a gentle, light chocolate brindle male Lab/Pit mix. He's about-5 years old and came to ACCT as a stray. Bull has adoring eyes and a very sweet sprit. He's calm, walks well on a leash, and is great with body handling. This big guy is a snuggle-bunny who has seen some hard times. He has some old wounds on his ears and neck, but Bull has done very well with dog introductions and really enjoys the company of people. Someone is really missing out on this dog!

SEALLER is an adult Pit/Mastiff mix who came to the shelter as a stray . Sealler is a big boy (with gigantic feet!) but he's calm, cool, and collected. He enjoys being pet and hugged. Sealler is excellent with body handling and would love to go to a forever home.

MARIO is a chocolaty, doe-eyed Pit mix who needs to get out of the shelter ASAP! Mario came in as a stray in July 2009 and has yet to find a foster home. He is about 1-2 years old and is a bundle of energy. Mario would thrive in a home that is active and understanding. He needs some work on leash walking, but he is eager to please and very food motivated. Mario would be happiest being the one and only pet in your home, but could live with a submissive female with proper introductions. NOTE: Since Mario has been waiting so long for his new home, his adopter will receive FREE dog training (donated by Sniffles & Friends).

URGENT Appeal from Philadelphia's Animals

To ALL Animal Lovers in the Greater Philadelphia Region:

Our animals need you NOW more than ever. Yesterday, the city animal shelter (ACCT) took in 50 dogs and 60 cats. That’s between 4 and 5 animals PER HOUR. And for every animal that comes in, another one must go out. What does “go out” really mean? Unless there’s a foster, adopter, or rescue group able to take it, the animal has to be killed.

Think of all the animals you know and love. Now imagine between 4 and 5 of them dying every hour. Can you imagine the sadness? The sense of loss? The void in your home and in your heart?

Staff and volunteers work round the clock to save these precious lives, but there’s only so much they can do without help from people like you. They need your help, and they need it now.

They’re not asking for life-long commitments. They’re asking for foster parents, for people who can temporarily care for a kitty, puppy, cat, or dog while it waits for an adopter. There’s simply not enough room in the shelter for them to wait there.

Do you worry about taking on veterinary bills? The shelter provides free medical care to your foster animal. Do you need support learning how to care for a furry friend – maybe you’ve never had one before? Good news….there’s an ARMY of volunteers who are here to help. Do you live in a small apartment? That’s ok. We can match you with an animal that fits your space. (Kitties can live happily in a bathroom!) Do you work during the day and cant get home to walk a dog? There are older pets who will sleep all day and wait patiently for you. Do you already have pets who might get jealous of another animal? Bring them in for a meet-and-greet, and we can find a pet whose personality blends with your resident pet.

Think about it…..with this many animals pouring into the shelter, you’re bound to find at least ONE to fit your needs and preferences. And you’re saving more than ONE life. Your saving that animal’s life, as well as the one who’s waiting to use his cage.

Please, Philadelphia (and beyond!), we NEED you. WE CAN’T DO THIS ALONE. It’s the holidays. Show the animals you truly care. Show them you’ll walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Let us help you help them.

Kitties, kitties, and more......KITTIES!

Is it kitten season again? No, but it sure feels like it.....the city animal shelter is OVERFLOWING with kitties, kitties, and more kitties!!!

These baby-sweeties are too young to be adopted yet (they must be 8 weeks old), so they NEED FOSTER HOMES IMMEDIATELY. The city animal shelter is a rough place for weebies, who are extra vulnerable to illness and stress.

All they need is a warm room (even a bathroom!) to stay relaxed, healthy, and safe. Do you have extra room in your home and your heart to save these furbabies?

Fosters get free vet care at the shelter, along with an army of volunteers to support you and help you find permanent homes for the kitties once they're ready. "LITTER A: The Tuxedos!"
There were originally 8 kittens in this litter, but only 3 are left. They are now anxiously awaiting their turn to be put into a loving foster home. These kittens are around 5-to-6 weeks old and there are 2 females and 1 male. All of the kittens have tuxedo coats. Everyone is so playful and they are so fun to watch! They enjoy snuggling up together for a nap. They were all curious about what was beyond their cage - -maybe you could show them?
“LITTER B: The Brady Bunch!”
These kitties remind me of the Brady Bunch when they sing “It’s a Sunshine Day’ – look how they’re all lined up behind one another! This group of 4 kittens came into the shelter as strays. They are around 4-to-5 weeks old. There are 2 black kittens and 2 grey and white tabbies. These kittens were a little shy and hiding behind each other, but as soon as their cage was opened they just had to investigate. They all loved being in the spotlight – just like the Brady Bunch!
“LITTER C: The Pointer Sisters!”
Check out this adorable trio of sisters! These lovely kittens are around 4-to-5 weeks old. There are 2 all-black kittens and a very pretty tortie. They were found living underneath someone’s front porch and they need someone to give them a more suitable home. All of their eyes are changing to a beautiful green color.
“LITTER D: Mike and Mickey!”
Mike and Mickey are a cute pair of male kittens that were surrendered to the shelter because their owners had too many animals. They are around 4-to-5 weeks old, both are handsome orange tabbies. These cute boys need a loving home that can take care of them until they are big enough to be neutered.
“LITTER E: Brownie!”
Ok, so this one’s not actually a litter….Brownie came into the shelter all by himself! He was found on the street and was very thin and scared. He is around 4 weeks old. Brownie can be a little shy at first, but he warms up quickly, especially when you scratch his neck! He needs a foster home to care for him and keep him company (he’s all by his lonesome self at the shelter!)
“LITTER F: Silky and her Babies!”
This momma and her babies are getting sick and need to leave immediately! Silky is a momma cat with three adorable young kittens. Silky is about 1-to-2 years old and has gorgeous green eyes. She is beginning to sneeze, so she and her kittens need to find a foster home immediately! Her kittens are very sweet and enjoyed their time snuggling up with momma. Some of her kittens have some eye discharge and will need some medication to get them all better, but the shelter will provide that to you. Note: Silky was so excited to get some scratches that she couldn’t sit still for a photo shoot!
“LITTER G: Beauty and her Beasts!”
Beauty and her kittens (who are anything but beasts!) have been here at the shelter for too long. They’re getting sick and need a foster home to get well. Beauty and her 4 kittens are about 5 weeks old. Beauty is a gorgeous black cat that is super friendly and loves attention. Two of her kittens are black while the other two are adorable torties. All four of her kittens are very sweet and playful. Beauty and her kittens enjoy snuggling together while getting some loving attention.
“LITTER H: Aunt Jemima and Firefighter!”
Aunt Jemima is an adult female with a single, newborn kitten. She is a beautiful orange tabby, which is very rare for female cats! She and her kitten were found living on a fire truck (hence the name!)! Aunt Jemima has a great appetite and is a very affectionate mother of her newborn. She and her kitten are catching a cold so it is very important these two find a foster home ASAP. Aunt Jemima absolutely adores her kitten and would do anything for her. Can you help this momma protect her baby?
“LITTER I: Lita and her Lovelies!”
Lita is a momma cat who just came in with her 4 kittens, who are only A FEW DAYS OLD! Lita is about 3-to-5 years old and has a gorgeous tortoiseshell coat. She is currently nursing her kittens. Lita and her lovelies were found underneath someone’s porch and they deserve a much better place to call home, even if it’s temporary. Please help these newborns stay healthy!
“LITTER J: Momma and the Babies!”
Momma is exactly what her name says! She is a 3-to-5 year old momma cat that is pure white with gorgeous green eyes. She and her 5 kittens were found on the porch of an abandoned house. There is one female kitten and all the rest are boys. The kittens are very tiny and LESS THAN A WEEK OLD! Please, help save this family!

“LITTER K: Lea and Company!”
Lea arrived here at the shelter along with 5 kittens. She is a very pretty tabby cat with some white markings. Lea is very sweet and she was so starved for attention that couldn’t sit still for a picture! Her kittens, who are around 5 weeks old, are absolutely adorable. Three of them look just like their momma and the other two are black and tuxedo. Can you foster this family until they’re old enough to be adopted?
